Nathalie Staempfli designed two ingenious soap dispensers that turn a soap bar into beautiful little soap flakes. One version attaches to the wall and allows you to use it with one hand. The other version is a grater that can stand by itself. It can be placed in the same way as a shower gel or shampoo.

Soap bars are more concentrated than liquid soap which has an ecological benefit: You don’t transport water around the globe and they only use paper for packaging. The solid blocks can easily be piled and allow a greater space efficiency during transportation.

iVisit, a audio and video conferencing company, is showing off an interesting technology using mobile phones that act as virtual eyes to help visually challenged users.

The technology called SeeScan allows users to point their cellphones at an object and have it identified in real-time. For instance users can point a phone at a at a can of Coke or a pack of frosted flakes or a bottle of shampoo and have the name of it read loud to them near-instantaneously.

Colourless Coke Can

A Nice concept of having a coke can with no colour to reduce manufaturing cost's and pollution. When doing some work for Grey advertising we came up with the concept of a white coke can, with no branding. Using the contents of the can to sell itself. This concept however makes much more sense

"A convex logo substitutes a colour sprayed can. The naked can helps to reduce air and water pollution occurred in its coloring process. It also reduces energy and effort to separate toxic color paint from aluminum in recycling process. Huge amount of energy and paint required to manufacture colored could be saved. Instead of toxic paint, manufacturers process aluminum with a pressing machine that indicates brand identity on surface."

Business card for an Enviromental Consultant. To avoid using paper the decision was made to create a rubber stamp then recycle anything that is hard enough into a business card. Very clever way of up cycling by using waste material and giving it a new use also means every card is individual.

Bike Storage in London

There is a huge issue in London about the lack of Bike storage. Especially in Shoreditch where there is a growing number of cyclists due too its proximity to Central London. I don't think the answer is to just place hoop bike storage like the picture below everywhere, surely there are more innovative and attractive ways of answering this problem. Many designers have looked into it but it seems to be the government that needs convincing. A nice simple answer I saw just off Columbia road was a Plant pot/bike storage, it's not over designed, does its job and blends in with the surroundings.

One more from New York. Here are a few pics form my visit to the droog store over there. Space it self is not as interesting as I would have hoped but everything within the space is wonderful as usual. Especially liked the House of Blue which is constructed from blue foam cut using a CNC machine,which allows very intricate detail,check out the leaves! Another piece I like is the Come A Little Bit Closer Bench by Nina Farkache, seats are placed on a bed of marbles which makes it very hard not to have fun share the experience with your neighbour.

Thoughtless acts and London Rubbish

Whilst taking pictures around London of things I found interesting I started to see a theme occurring. It seemed everywhere I walked there were items disposed of in curious ways. People using there surroundings to hide there rubbish . Rather than throw these item on the floor they placed them in very peculiar ways. This use of negative space through thoughtless acts can be seen all over London, especially on the underground where there are no bins.For more thoughtless acts take a look at Jane Fulton Suri's work.

Paul Priestman Talk at The Wapping Project

Attended a Talk by Paul Priestman of Priestman Goode in a green house at The Wapping Project on Tuesday. Was a very intimate talk about Priestman Goode's most recent project designing a series of high speed trains for China. Also showed a few small products that he had designed using technology at its very best. Especially interesting was the Water Pebble, an object that you use in the shower that monitors and records how long you spend in the shower. Then uses this information to change your behavioural patterns when taking a shower. Also very nice was the illuminated keyboard which he showed, that allows you to have a projected keyboard on a wipeable surface.

As part of the London Design Festival this week I attended a workshop by Greengaged at the Design Council in Covent Garden. The workshop I attended was called Design for Life: Barriers to Bahaviour Change, Curarted by Ed Gillespie founder of Futerra. It looked at the subect of Slow Design and Why change is happening so slowly? What are the barriers to change, both behaviourally and in the context of design? Where can great design interventions really make a difference?

19 Things I learnt in New York City

Spent last week in New York City, here are a few things I learnt along the way. Bare in mind most will be a comparison between London (where I live). Feel free to comment on any of my observations or add any to the list.

1. It's exactly as anyone has ever told

2. Their Hot Dogs are our Kebabs

3. Little dogs, and lots of them. New Yorker's like pets but don't necessarily have the space

4. Having a party, buy Red Cups

5. Streets easy to navigate through numerical system.

6. Always Tip at least 10%

7. Pizza by the slice (Slice of Cheese slang for Margarita)

8. Subway has airconditioning and music at platforms

9. Subway map however is not as clear London

10. Don't bend your subway card,you'll lose all your money,poor choice of material for card!

11. Fire Hydrants act as good seating for locals

12. East vs West..Manhattan/Brooklyn Rivalry

13. Is bigger always better! Don't expect to buy anything small in the supermarket..

14. Compared to London New York is Taller and thinner, therefore quicker to get around

15. No cooking ability necessary, most eat out or eat takeaway

16. friendlier than London, easy to meet someone on the subway

17. Architecture and alot of it, spent much of the week looking up.

18. JFK Airport not as advanced as Heathrow terminal 5

19. Spoilt for milk. At least 7 varieties, many containing different vitamins

Crimes Against Design (Heathrow Terminal 3 short stay carpark)

There are many situations where you are inconvenienced because something has been badly designed,whether it be a product,a building or a service. My most recent encounter was with the short stay car park at Heathrow Terminal 3 and my difficulty in trying to pay for parking. Upon returning to the carpark, I got into the lift with many others, I got out on the 3rd floor,putting my hand in my pocket to get my keys I realised i had not paid yet!, I looked around for a minute,but could not see anywhere to pay. Had I missed the pay machine downstairs, a sign soon confirmed this. I then got back into the lift soon too realise I was standing next to exactly the same people and everyone had made the same mistake. Was this a mistake on our behalf however,or was it the fact that this system was badly designed.

I soon found the pay machine on the lower ground floor, one below the departures floor, lurking next to some vending machines. the placement of these was not an error, someone had thought about this, but obviously not very well, why was there no machine on any of the 6 floors paople had parked on?. Unless this placement was meant to force an error. How much money had been made from people not being able to find where to pay?

Inconveniences like this happen everyday but often it is the user that blames themselves. Next time something like this happens to you, question whether it was your fault or the Designers.
